Choose from five different base maps

  • LINZ Aerial view & ESRI World Imagery: Great for revealing coastal features which may be under water at high tide. Example
  • Open Street Map: Standard street map view.
  • NZ Topo Map: Official topographic maps.
  • New Zealand Marine Charts: All available marine charts from LINZ, layered by scale. You can fade individual charts in and out to see what's underneath. Only charts suitable for the current view are loaded.

Overlay additional geographical information

  • Open Maps: Combination of Open Sea Maps (lights, rocks, etc.) and Open Rail Maps.
  • LINZ Gazetteer: Over 65,000 official place names, including historic content.
  • OSM Gazetteer: Similar collection from Open Street Maps.
  • Extra: Hand-crafted notes of interest to mariners and Coastguard volunteers.
  • CG Units: Complete set of New Zealand Coastguard units with website links.

Filtering: Enter a word in the filter box to show only data containing that text. Prefix with * to search the entire popup text. Example (*chips)

Explore with map facilities

  • Zoom: Use + and - buttons.
  • Measure Tool: Measure distances in nautical miles, statute miles, or metres.
  • Geolocate: Single click to find position, double click to follow.
  • Training URL Generator: Create URLs for Local Area Familiarisation training (specify groups/levels).
  • Search Patterns: Create and display search patterns (see below).
  • Current Position: Get text of current lat/long in different formats.

Shareable URLs: The URL always reflects the current chart state, so you can set it up and share the link.

The Search Pattern Generator Page

Designed as a training tool for checking Search Pattern Calculations and visualizing them on the map.

  • Course Types: Sector, Expanding Box, and Creeping Line Ahead.
  • Calculators: Includes Drift Calculator and Beam Sighting Distance calculator.
  • Storage: Save and reload searches via local storage or URL.
  • Visualization: Ground Track, Beam Sighting Distance over Surface, and Beam Sighting Distance over Ground can be individually faded to visualize drift effects.

Examples:

  • View Search Pattern on Map: Opens a view of NZ charts with a pattern shown. Use the search pattern sliders to visualise the three different plotted lines.
  • Open Search Pattern Planner: Opens the planner with data pre-entered. You can click 'visualise' or further configure the search.
